Late Sunday morning, and the area around Kichijoji Station is already full of people.

From the north exit, a 9-minute walk along Inokashira-dori leads to one of the newest Anytime Fitness locations in Tokyo. The store opened on September 14, 2026, and the grand opening posters are still on the windows.

Just inside the door stands a small closet. Wooden hangers hang in a quiet row above a set of shoe cubbies. It feels less like gym equipment and more like a corner of a neighborhood boutique, and within the first few steps, there is no doubt that this is Kichijoji.

The route begins at the north exit of JR Kichijoji Station, where the kirarina Keio Kichijoji building rises above the station. On weekends, the crowds start the moment the ticket gates open.

The journey begins at the north exit of Kichijoji Station.

The way out passes through a dense shopping street. Cram schools, an English school, a mobile phone shop, and a UNIQLO crowd together, their signs stacked vertically beneath a tangle of power lines. In Kichijoji, density shows itself in how little sky is left.

Turning onto Inokashira-dori, the scenery opens up. Street trees stand at even intervals, the sidewalk is wide, and the noise of the station thins with every step.

Before long, a granite facade comes into view. The gym occupies the ground floor of the building, and a running man pole sign by the road makes it easy to spot from a distance. A bicycle-only parking area in front holds about 15 bikes; motorcycles and scooters are not permitted.

Atmosphere & Equipment

A notice board near the entrance displays a floor map that divides the space into 6 color-coded zones: restrooms and showers, lockers, free weights, functional training, machines, and cardio. The dress code is strict as well: no jeans, suits, skirts, leather shoes, or sandals.

Next to the board is the closet. Hanging up a coat and setting down a pair of shoes is a small act, yet here it feels a little more considered.

Straight ahead from the entrance are the restroom and showers. Both the showers and the changing rooms are private, and a free water server is available.

The machine area sits beneath an exposed concrete ceiling, with ducts and cables running overhead and ceiling fans turning slowly. Below, Life Fitness selectorized machines stand in neat rows, all of them new. Each machine has its own small timer and a sticker limiting use to 30 minutes per session.

By the window stands a Life Fitness multi-station. On the other side of the glass is a strip of greenery, and the leaves can be seen moving with each pull of the cable, a rare view for a gym in the city.

The free weight area includes 5 adjustable benches and a combined total of 3 HAMMER STRENGTH power racks and Smith machines. It also has a dedicated bench press rack by PRECOR, an all-in-one unit with plate storage on both sides. After 100 stores, this is the first one of its kind on the pilgrimage.

The queue for the Smith machines and racks is handled by a pair of LCD writing pads. The board on the left shows the current user’s start and end times. The board on the right is for the next person, who writes a name and start time. Each session is limited to 30 minutes, and only 1 reservation can be made at a time. The instructions are posted in both Japanese and English.

It is a 30-minute promise, devised by a busy gym in a busy town, and another first on the pilgrimage.

In the stretching area, members lay out their own mats. There are no mirrors, which makes it a space for focusing on the body rather than on reflections, and that is also unusual.

Crowd Levels

The visit took place late on a Sunday morning, and the gym was quite busy.

The adjustable benches are arranged 3 in front and 2 behind, which leaves limited open space. The path to the dumbbells is also somewhat long.

Even so, training is entirely possible. Watching how others move and stepping onto machines as they free up is enough to complete a full session.

The per-machine timers and the LCD queue boards both seem designed with crowds in mind, as tools for coexisting with them rather than avoiding them.

Surroundings

Kichijoji has 2 other Anytime Fitness locations. The closest in atmosphere is the stylish Kichijoji station-front location. The Inokashira-dori store is slightly smaller, and its members appear to skew younger.

For days when a calmer pace is preferred, Kichijoji Higashicho is another option. With 3 locations in one town, the choice can depend on the mood of the day, which is fitting for Kichijoji.

Overall Impressions

New machines. A dedicated bench press rack. A queue managed on LCD writing pads. A closet lined with wooden hangers.

The thoughtful touches of a brand-new store sit side by side with the style of the town around it. The crowds and the tight layout are the one area where the gym has not yet caught up with the energy of Kichijoji. Visiting at a quieter hour would likely reveal a very different side of it.

The pilgrimage continues.
