Anytime Fitness Kokuryo Review — Underground, Where the Tracks Once Ran

Step through the ticket gates at Kokuryo Station and the sky opens up. A station building wrapped in vertical wooden louvers sits low beneath a single residential tower. Trains once crossed this square at street level; since the Keio Line was moved underground, the level-crossing bells have gone quiet, and the space they left behind has become plaza, walkway and open air.

The visit came on the last day of a 3-day weekend, early in the afternoon, when the neighborhood carried the slightly loosened air of a holiday about to end.

Across the rotary stands a glass-fronted building marked with the familiar running man. In the corner of the sign, a small “B1” gives the game away: this gym is not at street level.

Access

The walk from the station takes about 1 minute, a distance measured in steps rather than blocks.

The entrance is a granite-clad stairwell topped by a blue logo, with the station building reflected in the glass behind it. With each step down, the sound of the street fades a little further.

Below the logo, a staircase leads straight down to the gym.

At the bottom, a running man spans an entire wall, noticeably larger than the one on the street. This is where the pilgrimage stop begins.

Atmosphere & Equipment

There are no windows. From the basement floor there is no telling whether the sun is still out or what time it has become; the room offers only light, machines and the rhythm of breathing.

The space is on the compact side, and selectorized weight-stack machines take center stage. Moving a single pin changes the load, which makes for an easy, uncomplicated circuit built for everyday training.

Covering the whole body thoroughly takes a little planning. Plate-loaded machines and free weights need to be worked into the routine to fill the gaps the stack machines leave.

There are 2 adjustable benches, and the dumbbell rack sits right in front of them. Swapping dumbbells means keeping an eye on the people around, and the tight layout tends to encourage a quiet kind of courtesy.

The 3 Smith machines and power racks stand shoulder to shoulder in a single row.

The stretching area has 3 mats laid out before anyone arrives. When it is empty, there is enough room for a full stretching routine, a small piece of thoughtfulness that is easy to appreciate.

Lockers, showers and restrooms are at the back, and this part of the gym feels comfortably spacious.

There is no free water server, so picking up a drink before heading down the stairs is a sensible habit here.

Mobile reception is somewhat weak underground. Anyone streaming music or logging sets in an app may notice, though the reduced connection also makes it easier to stay focused on the set at hand.

Crowd Levels

On the final afternoon of a holiday weekend, the floor was busier than expected. Despite the station-front location, the surrounding area is largely residential, and locals naturally gather here on days off, a sign of how rooted the gym is in its neighborhood.

For a quieter session, weekdays or off-peak hours are the better choice.

Surroundings

Back at street level, the sky opens up again. The station area has a Matsuya beef bowl restaurant, a Seiyu supermarket that never turns its lights off, and Koko Square, a shopping building marked by a large clock. Shopping or a meal before or after training is easy to fit in.

A short walk away, a green walkway begins. This is where the railway tracks used to run. When the Keio Line went underground, the land where trains once passed was turned into a path for people.

A short walk from the gym, a green walkway follows the old railway line.

The street trees are young and slender, only recently planted, and still at the start of the years they will spend on this path. Along the way, curved benches that look carved from solid wood offer a place to rest after training, and in October the breeze already carries a hint of autumn.

The station area is neat and well kept, and a single turn leads into quiet residential streets. Kokuryo is an unhurried town, the kind of place where daily life looks easy to settle into.

Overall Impression

A 1-minute walk from the station and a single flight of stairs separate the platform from the gym floor. That proximity is hard to beat.

On the other hand, the space is modest, with 2 benches and a machine-centered layout, and holiday afternoons draw a crowd. Even so, the 3 mats waiting on the floor reflect a quiet attentiveness that gives the gym its character.

This is not a gym worth a long journey. It is a gym for the people who live in this town: a place to walk down the stairs after work or on a weekend morning, as naturally as any other part of the day.

The pilgrimage continues.
