The Hokuso Line runs east from Tokyo toward Chiba, and for this visit it was an entirely new route. Stepping off at Shin-Shibamata Station, the air already carries a faint hint of Chiba — a reminder that the prefectural border is only a short walk away.
The area around the station is quiet and unhurried. Neither people nor traffic seem to be in a rush, and the calm atmosphere is a pleasant contrast to central Tokyo.
The gym sits just 1 minute from the station, on the 2nd floor of a 2-story building with a Matsumoto Kiyoshi drugstore on the ground floor. A drugstore downstairs and an Anytime Fitness upstairs is a familiar pairing near stations across Tokyo — the two seem to suit each other well.

Access
From the ticket gate at Shin-Shibamata Station, the gym is a 1-minute walk. The bright yellow Matsumoto Kiyoshi sign serves as an easy landmark, and the gym is directly above it. Finding it requires almost no effort.
The entrance is on the side of the building, where a staircase leads up to the 2nd floor.
Atmosphere and Equipment
The floor is square-shaped and feels spacious for a gym so close to a station. Large windows line the walls, and the natural light makes the space seem even larger than it is.
Alongside the background music, an announcement promoting a member referral campaign plays over the speakers — a first after more than 100 Anytime Fitness locations visited. The playlist leans toward upbeat pop, designed more to energize than to relax.
The machine area features a wide range of selectorized machines, with plenty of variety. There are 4 Hammer Strength power racks and 4 adjustable benches.
Plate-loaded machines are also available, with a dumbbell rack further back.
One unusual piece of equipment is the Life Fitness glute bridge machine, built for hip thrust–style training. The weight is changed simply by moving a pin. How to use it is not immediately obvious at first glance, and it is rarely seen at other Anytime Fitness locations.
The cardio area also faces the windows, so walking on a treadmill comes with an outside view.
Lockers, showers and restrooms are located to the left of the entrance, and there are enough of each. A free water server is available. There is no protein server.
The body composition analyzer is a Tanita unit paired with an iPad running “TANITA FIT.” Measurement requires only entering a few basic details — no app download is needed — and the process is remarkably easy.
Guest members can use it free of charge, so visitors passing through can take a measurement before heading home.
Crowd Levels
The visit took place around midday on a Saturday. A fair number of members were training, but the gym never felt crowded.
Most members appeared to be in their 30s and 40s, and the overall mood was calm and focused. Despite the upbeat music, the floor itself remained quiet.
The layout is reasonable. The gym is not enormous, but moving around does not require much care to avoid others. With 4 racks and 4 benches, there was no waiting for equipment even on a Saturday afternoon.
Surrounding Area
The area around Shin-Shibamata Station is quiet and residential, with no large shopping centers.
A short walk leads to Shibamata Taishakuten, a historic temple. In front of Keisei Shibamata Station stands a statue of Tora-san, the beloved hero of the classic film series set in this neighborhood.
The approach to the temple was packed with sightseers, perhaps thanks to the clear weather. It is a very different side of Shibamata from the quiet area around Shin-Shibamata Station.
Beyond the temple lies the Edogawa River. A short walk along the riverbank brings the opposite shore into view — that is already Chiba. Standing on the border between Tokyo and Chiba, the visit begins to feel like a small trip.
Overall Impressions
A new train line, a hint of Chiba in the air, a quiet station and a bright gym full of windows.
With 4 Hammer Strength racks, a solid lineup of selectorized machines, a rare glute bridge machine and an app-free body composition analyzer, this location packs a lot into a spot just 1 minute from the station.
The music is upbeat, yet the members are calm and the gym stays uncrowded even on a Saturday. Lively sound and a quiet floor — that combination defines the character of this store.
On the way back, Shibamata Taishakuten and the Edogawa River are within walking distance. A workout here comes with a small trip attached.
The pilgrimage continues.
