Anytime Fitness Iidabashi Review|A Dated Basement Gym, but Kagurazaka Waits Outside

店舗レビュー

Three minutes on foot from Exit B1 of Iidabashi Station.

Descending into the basement, the first impression is honest: this place is old.

The atmosphere calls to mind a slightly oversized inn in a rural tourist town — the kind with a game corner in the corner that hasn’t been updated in decades. Every machine is covered in plastic wrap, for reasons that remain unclear. Weight stack machines line the entrance, a two-mat stretching area sits just to the right, and the free weight zone occupies the back. Two adjustable benches, three Smith machines and power racks, dumbbells capped at 30kg. The path to the dumbbells is cramped, running almost directly into the benches. The cleaning cloths for machines are shared and perpetually damp. The water server runs on hydrogen water — well-stocked and clearly aimed at the business crowd.

The constraints of a central Tokyo location are understandable. The price, at ¥8,547 per month, is harder to justify against what is on offer.

On the way back, a short walk through Kagurazaka in the rain. Packed with people despite the weather. The kind of neighborhood that makes you want to live nearby.

Equipment

The facility includes a hydrogen water server, private showers, private changing rooms, Wi-Fi, a personal trainer, an AED, contract lockers, a high school student pass program, and supplement sales. No body composition scale, bicycle parking, or car parking. The stretching area fits two mats. Cleaning cloths for machines are shared and tend to stay damp — a minor but noticeable point.

Access

Three minutes from Exit B1 of Iidabashi Station, served by the JR Sobu Line, Tokyo Metro Tozai, Yurakucho, and Namboku lines, and the Toei Oedo Line.

The gym is in the basement of an office building. The entrance takes a moment to locate on a first visit.

Atmosphere and Equipment

The basement sets the tone immediately. The building carries its age openly, and the gym interior reflects that.

Every machine is covered in plastic wrap — the reason for this was not apparent during the visit and remains unclear. Weight stack machines fill the entrance area, with a two-mat stretching zone just to the right. The free weight area sits at the back. Two adjustable benches and three Smith machines and power racks make up the strength equipment. Dumbbells reach 30kg, which falls short for more advanced training. The path to the dumbbells runs directly alongside the benches, leaving little room to maneuver. Cleaning cloths are shared across machines and stay damp throughout.

The hydrogen water server stands out — multiple units, well-maintained, clearly a deliberate choice for a business district clientele.

Crowd Levels

Busy on weekend afternoons. The free weight area was fully occupied around midday, with groups of younger members accounting for much of the traffic. Weekday evenings with the business crowd added may push capacity further.

Surrounding Area

The walk back through Kagurazaka after the session was in the rain, but the streets were packed regardless.

Stone-paved lanes, a dense concentration of restaurants, and a neighborhood character that is hard to find elsewhere in Tokyo. The gym is a footnote. Kagurazaka is the reason to make the trip.

Overall

The limitations of a central Tokyo location are understandable — the footprint, the age, the equipment ceiling. What is harder to accept is the monthly fee of ¥8,547 against what is delivered. Comparable suburban gyms on this pilgrimage offer significantly more for the same or lower cost.

Not a Pilgrimage Class gym. The neighborhood surrounding it, however, is worth every step.

The pilgrimage continues.
