A rainy Saturday, and the sky over Sugamo was a single sheet of grey. Outside the station, signs for long-established sweet shops still hang where they have hung for decades, the same names in the same places. This is a neighborhood that does not hurry.
Anytime Fitness Sugamo sits 2 minutes from that station front, quietly lit on the second floor of a building that has seen a few decades of its own.

Access
The gym is a 2-minute walk from Sugamo Station on the JR Yamanote Line, a short stretch along the main road.
The landmark is a tall purple sign at the entrance of the Dia Building: “24-hour, year-round fitness gym,” with a large “2F” beneath it. There is little room for getting lost.
On the second floor, an umbrella stand waits beside the door, with a wooden bench opposite. On a wet day, wet umbrellas can be left here before stepping inside. A small thing, and on a rainy day a welcome one.
Atmosphere and Equipment
The gym occupies a single floor. Machines line the front, and the weight of iron grows heavier toward the back. Even on a rainy day, the light through the windows is soft.
Both selectorized and plate-loaded machines are available, and in good numbers. Upper body and lower body alike can be covered here in full.
Some of the equipment shows its age. The height-adjustment pin on the ab bench refused to budge, but a word to the staff brought someone over right away to help. Age, here, is balanced by people. That is the character of this gym.
The free weight area has 4 adjustable benches: 2 facing one way, 2 facing the other. They are arranged so that the path to the dumbbell rack never crosses anyone else’s. Fetching dumbbells requires no weaving around other lifters. An understated layout, and one that pays off more with every visit.
At the foot of the power rack lies a HAMMER STRENGTH platform: wood in the center, rubber on either side. The wood is covered in countless scratches. One can only wonder how many barbells have come down here.
The cardio area is to the right of the entrance, where treadmills face a wall of large windows. Running here means looking down on the rain-soaked avenue, cars passing and roadside greenery blurring, the city drifting slowly backward.
Next to the treadmills is a stretching area with permanent mats, along with balance balls and foam rollers.
A spin bike also stands by the window, a good alternative on days when running does not appeal.
High on one wall sits a large air purifier, oddly prominent within the room. It leaves a quiet impression of a gym that pays attention even to the air.
There is also a body composition analyzer. According to the posted notice, it is available 24 hours a day, measurement is free, and printing results on the dedicated paper costs ¥200 (tax included).
The showers, restroom and changing area are grouped together to the left of the entrance. The space feels a little tight, and the building itself carries the years. For the second floor of a building right by the station, though, it is well within reason.
Crowd Levels
The visit fell on a Saturday at midday. Two minutes from a Yamanote Line station, a crowd seemed almost certain.
There were a fair number of people, yet no one was left waiting for machines. Given the location, it counts as on the quieter side.
Most members appeared to be men in their 30s and 40s, each working steadily through their own routine. Everyone’s pace seemed to resonate comfortably with everyone else’s, creating a calm and settled atmosphere. Perhaps something of Sugamo’s unhurried character has found its way inside.
Note: Crowd levels vary by day and time. This reflects a single visit.
The Neighborhood
After the workout, the rain was still falling. Back near the station is the entrance to the Sugamo Jizo-dori Shopping Street: a red arch crowned with a golden fan, on the street often called “Grandma’s Harajuku.” On that rainy Saturday afternoon, the shopping street ran straight on beyond the arch.
A neighborhood worth wandering after a workout is part of what this gym offers.
Overall Impressions
Two minutes from the station. A sign impossible to miss. An entrance where umbrellas can be left on a rainy day. A layout where paths never cross, a platform etched with scratches, treadmills that look down on the street.
The equipment and the building both show their age, but when something goes wrong, help arrives quickly. This is not a gym that competes on newness. It stands on age, calm and the care of its people, and it suits Sugamo well.
The pilgrimage continues.
