Anytime Fitness Fuji Aobadori Review|Two Buses Away, and Nobody Rushing You

I looked up at the bus departure board at Shin-Fuji Station.

10:40 in the morning. Three lines already showed the same message: service has ended for the day.

This is that kind of town.

The Shinkansen stops here. The local line does not. To reach Anytime Fitness Fuji Aobadori, you take a bus to Fuji Station, then board a second one. The gym asks for that effort before it gives you anything.

And once you are inside, it turns out to be worth the trouble.

Access

The official figure is a 25-minute walk from Fuji Station.

That number deserves some context. The route runs straight along a wide arterial road with very little shade. Walk it in summer and you will have worked up a sweat before your first set.

I stayed near Shin-Fuji the night before, so my route started there.

At 10:40 in the morning, several routes had already finished running for the day.

Shin-Fuji and Fuji are two different stations despite the similar names. The Shinkansen stops at Shin-Fuji; the Tokaido Line runs through Fuji. The two are not directly connected, and a local bus bridges the gap.

From Fuji Station, you board a second bus. Get off at Kenso-go Chosha Iriguchi, and the gym is a 5-minute walk away.

So it is 2 transfers from Shin-Fuji. Riding is easy enough; the frequency is what catches you out. Some community bus routes finish for the day before noon, and without checking the timetable first you can lose a long stretch of the afternoon waiting for a connection.

One look at the parking lot tells you what this gym assumes. It is built for people arriving by car.

Inside the Gym

My first thought on seeing the building was that it was big.

A standalone two-floor structure on a main road. Not a leased unit inside someone else’s building — the entire structure is the gym. The ANYTIME FITNESS logo sits on two of the walls, visible from a distance.

Inside, it is just as large.

The 1st floor holds plate-loaded machines and the free weight area. The 2nd floor has selectorized machines, the cardio zone, and the showers and toilets.

What stands out most is the spacing. There is genuine room between pieces of equipment — enough that two people can pass each other without anyone stepping aside. The gap between the benches and the dumbbell rack is generous, so nothing bottlenecks.

Dumbbells go up to 60kg. That is a serious range.

Three racks and 1 Smith machine. Two adjustable benches and 2 flat ones. On paper those numbers are ordinary, but with this much floor space around them, the wait almost never materializes.

The stretching area is large as well, though mats are not left out — you lay one down yourself.

The cardio zone upstairs is the highlight. Large windows sit directly in front of the treadmills, so you watch the town while you run. It is a different experience from the windowless basements many gyms put their cardio equipment in.

Structurally it resembles the Hanno and Higashi-Tokorozawa branches, but roughly 1.5 times the size.

Showers and toilets are plentiful and clean. The absence of a free water server is the only real omission.

How Crowded

Saturday, early afternoon. People were there. Crowded, it was not.

I never waited for a machine. I never cut a set short because someone was hovering.

Nobody rushes you here. You work at your own pace, for as long as you want, in whatever order you feel like. That atmosphere is the defining feature of this place.

One man was gently running his hand over the plates on the plate rack.

His own form of courtship, presumably. There is enough space here that he could do it undisturbed.

The Surrounding Area

The immediate surroundings are standard suburban arterial road — not a neighborhood built for walking. Fuji City itself, however, offers plenty of reasons to linger.

After training I headed to Shin-Fuji Station for a bowl of raw shirasu at Marugoto Surugawan.

Raw shirasu at Marugoto Surugawan, Shin-Fuji Station. My second bowl in as many days.

Ginger and chopped scallions. Nothing else is required. It was my second bowl of raw shirasu in 2 days and I did not tire of it once. Shizuoka makes itself felt.

Afterward I stopped by Fujisan Messe.

The exterior of Fujisan Messe, an exhibition facility in Fuji City
Fujisan Messe. An art exhibition and sale was running that day.

Banners lined the wide stone plaza out front, carrying the city’s slogan about the beginning of the road to the summit. Inside, an exhibition and sale of work by an artist named mocha was underway.

I do not know much about art. What I do know is that the cheapest piece ran around 500,000 yen. Digital prints, limited to 350 copies each. Around 30 works were on display, and a fair number already carried sold tags. Quite a business, I thought.

A gym, a seafood bowl, and an art exhibition — all in one afternoon. That is the appeal of traveling out of the city.

Overall

Far from the station. Few buses. Judged on access alone, this is plainly an inconvenient gym.

I gave it 10 points anyway, for one simple reason: the experience inside is good.

Space. Room to breathe. Gaps between the machines, no waiting, a cardio floor with real windows. You set your own rhythm and nobody interferes with it.

Anyone worn down by crowded gyms near city stations will understand what that is worth.

The appeal of a suburban branch comes down to this: the air of a place where you train at your own pace.

If you can drive, or if you have other business in Fuji City, this one earns the trip. If you are coming by public transport, check the bus timetable before you set out. Do that much, and the rest is a wide, quiet gym waiting for you.
