Anytime Fitness Nakano Station — Thin on Equipment, Unmatched Neighborhood

Past the front desk, the layout reveals itself as a loop.
Restrooms and showers sit at the center, with a walking path that circles the whole floor.
Stretching mats and cardio machines line the left side. Stack-loaded machines fill the right.
No plate-loaded equipment in sight.
There isn’t much space, and everything lives on a single floor.
And yet the neighborhood outside might be the most fully realized stretch of the Chuo Line.
Few locations show this wide a gap between the gym itself and the street it sits on.

Access

4 minutes on foot from Nakano Station.
The route runs through the Minamiguchi Hondori arcade before reaching the building.
The ground floor holds a Sugi Drug pharmacy, useful for grabbing body-care supplies on the way out.
Construction fencing and redevelopment towers dominate the walk, impossible to miss along the way.

Interior and Atmosphere

The stairwell up to the second floor opens onto a “24H OPEN!!” sign, purple and black lettering against bare concrete.

The gym occupies a single floor, split left and right in a layout similar to the Ogikubo Ekimae location.
Stretching mats and cardio machines, including treadmills and bikes, sit to the left.
Stack-loaded machines fill the right. Plate-loaded equipment is absent entirely.
The overall count runs low, closer in feel to a municipal sports center than a dedicated training facility.
The body scanner comes in at ¥500 per use, a touch steep compared to other locations.
One adjustable bench. Three Smith racks. The free weight area is tight, cramped enough to make compound lifts feel a little crowded.
This isn’t a location to choose for its equipment. Location and layout are the draw here.

Crowd Levels

Turnout runs high. A whiteboard sign-up system handles the wait, old-school but effective.
There was, in fact, a wait. Smith racks and free weight space stayed occupied for long stretches.
Serious lifters were scarce, though. Most visitors moved through routines rather than chasing heavy numbers.
The feel skews toward central Tokyo rather than the quieter west-side stretches of the Chuo Line.

Neighborhood

Glass towers rise near the station, Sumitomo Realty’s building among them.
A bus terminal sits nearby, and the whole scene carries the weight of active redevelopment. The area around the former Nakano Sunplaza site keeps shifting year over year.

The Minamiguchi Hondori arcade tells a different story, one of shops that never seem to close their doors. A longtime Fujiya outlet, independent shops, and chain stores share space under the same covered walkway.

One turn off the main street leads into a side alley strung with lights. Yakiniku restaurant curtains hang in a row, lanterns glowing over the brick-paved path.
Evening brings the busiest stretch, restaurant signs lighting up one after another as the neighborhood shifts character.

New and old coexist here, and that friction is what makes Nakano interesting.
Green space, shopping arcades, restaurants — all of it, in one stretch of ground.
Nothing else along the Chuo Line pulls it together quite this well. Enough to make the neighborhood itself the reason to visit.

Overall

The equipment falls short, plainly.
Machine count runs low, and plate-loaded gear is nowhere to be found.
The scale lands closer to a municipal sports center, crowding included.
Between the machine count and the ¥500 body scan, value for money isn’t the selling point.
The neighborhood, though, stands apart.
This visit left a stronger impression of a place worth living in than a gym worth training in.
What does a gym need to offer? This one raises the question rather than answers it.
