Anytime Fitness Koenji Review — Where the Street Comes Upstairs

店舗レビュー

Late Sunday morning. The shopping street in Koenji was already full of people.

Beside Village Vanguard stands a narrow building, the Anytime sign running vertically down its entrance. Floors 3 and 4. The elevator, however, does not stop at the 4th — stepping off at the 3rd is simply part of the route.

The 3rd floor holds only restrooms, a shower, and a vending machine. A bottle of water there costs 100 yen, the lowest price found at any location on this pilgrimage so far.

One flight of stairs up to the 4th floor. The door opens onto a density that feels as though the noise of the street has been carried upward intact.

Leave Koenji Station by the south exit and follow the shopping street. Roughly 4 minutes of vintage clothing stores and restaurants alternating along the way. The building housing Village Vanguard appears on the right, and the entrance sits just to its left.

One point worth knowing in advance: the elevator does not reach the 4th floor. Get off at the 3rd and take the stairs for the final flight. https://www.google.com/maps/embed?pb=!1m18!1m12!1m3!1d3239.9242976886812!2d139.64585757578874!3d35.70348047258006!2m3!1f0!2f0!3f0!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!3m3!1m2!1s0x6018f27d31ce871b%3A0xc2e2a51483aabf91!2z44Ko44OL44K_44Kk44Og44OV44Kj44OD44OI44ON44K5IOmrmOWGhuWvuuW6lw!5e0!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1785052483320!5m2!1sen!2sus

Inside the Gym

The 3rd floor is restrooms, a shower, and a vending machine. Nothing more.

There is one restroom each for men and women, with a notice asking that use be kept to 5 minutes. Other locations post 30 minutes. The shortness of the figure says everything about how few there are.

Bottled water from the machine costs 100 yen, and a free water server stands separately. Hydration is never a problem here.

By the entrance, umbrellas are offered free of charge — the first time such a service has appeared anywhere on this pilgrimage.

The 4th floor holds the training area. Long and narrow.

A stretching area occupies the near end, tight on space and without mats. Cardio machines line the right-hand side, modest in number. Beyond them stand the selectorized machines, and past those, the free weight area.

3 adjustable benches, 5 Smith machines and power racks. Measured against the floor area, that is far from sparse.

There are no windows. The lighting alone shapes the atmosphere, and the phrase “a gym in a vintage clothing district” settles onto the place with unexpected ease.

Crowd Levels

A location on the Chuo Line. Some degree of crowding was expected.

Even so, the numbers are high. On a Sunday before noon, the free weight area held a constant queue. No system manages the order. Waiting is simply waiting.

For the size of the floor, there are too many people. The crowd skews young, with the air of a place where training sits on the same shelf as style.

For a session built around an unbroken rhythm of one’s own, this may not be the easiest room.

Surroundings

The neighborhood is lively. Vintage clothing, restaurants, small goods shops. Time dissolves simply by walking.

As a place to live alone, Koenji ranks very high indeed.

The walk back led to Shoryubo, a Chinese restaurant nearby.

Shoryubo. A well-worn menu.

Mala daoxiao noodles, served in the clay pot itself. Thick hand-shaved noodles carry the heat well, and the sweat that had only just settled returned in full.

One practical note: the restaurant accepts cash only. Worth checking a wallet before sitting down.

Overall

The equipment is there. Racks and benches are sufficient. Even the umbrellas are provided.

What holds the score down comes to a single point: the crowding. The energy of the street travels all the way up to the floor, and for anyone who chose Koenji as home, that is presumably part of the daily bargain.

Within walking distance, this location makes complete sense. As a destination reached by changing trains, it does not.
