Midday during Obon. A bus ride from Matsumoto Station leads to the residential streets of Tsukama.
The gym sits in a single-story building, a coin laundry attached to one side. Stepping inside, the first impression is space. Room to breathe.
The machines are not crowded together. The aisles are wide. Other members were present, but no one waited for equipment. Perhaps it was the imagination, but a fair number of lean, well-built regulars seemed to train here.
After the workout came a visit to Tsukama Shrine, lunch at Shinshuya for soba and katsu, a stop at Yohashira Shrine, and by evening, a walk to Matsumoto Castle itself. Both the gym and the city carried the same quiet sense of ease.

Access
From Matsumoto Station, it is a 25-minute walk, a fair distance. From the nearest bus stop, it is 7 minutes on foot, or about 10 minutes by car.
This reads less like a stop for castle-visiting tourists and more like a suburban gym built around car access. The generous parking lot backs that up.

Along the way, the Susuki River comes into view, mountains rising beyond it. In Matsumoto, the city and the surrounding nature sit remarkably close together.

Interior and Equipment
Past the entrance, lockers, showers, and restrooms line up in a straight row. Sufficient in number, and clean.
The stretching area is spacious, though mats are not provided and must be laid out by hand.
The training floor extends to the right, somewhat narrow and long in shape. Weight-stack machines sit near the front, with plate-loaded machines and a free-weight area further in. Chest-focused plate-loaded machines in particular stood out for their range.
The cardio area faces the windows, open and bright. Four adjustable benches are set up, with clear space leading to the dumbbell rack. Four Smith machines and power racks round out the strength section.
What stood out most was the sense of space in the design. It is not just the equipment count, but the uncrowded feel of the floor that shapes the comfort here. The atmosphere recalled Nerima Doshida.
Photography inside the gym is not permitted, so this section relies on description alone.
Crowd Levels
The visit fell during Obon, around midday, and while other members were present, no wait for equipment ever formed. Training at one’s own pace was easy throughout.
The Neighborhood
After the workout, a visit to Tsukama Shrine, a former National Treasure and now a designated Important Cultural Property, standing quietly among the houses.
From there, a short walk to a green noren curtain: Shinshuya, known for hand-cut soba and so-su katsu. Following the sign down a lane between old houses, the storefront comes into view.

The soba and so-su katsu set left nothing to complain about, generous in portion and flavor. Layered katsu, fragrant soba. A satisfying meal after training.

Lunch finished, the walk continued to Yohashira Shrine. Its vermilion hall stands out at the center of the city.

Walking further through the city reveals rivers, quiet residential streets, and, unexpectedly, a distinctly urban side as well. Restaurants line the streets, foot traffic is heavy. For daily living, somewhere a bit further from the center might suit better.
By evening, the walk turned toward Matsumoto Castle. At the entrance, a map confirms the route to the keep.

At the former site of the main palace, stone markers spell out the names of rooms that once stood there. Now, only lawn remains, but the layout still surfaces in the mind’s eye.

As the sun set, lights began to rise along the keep, glowing softly across the moat’s surface.

By full dark, the illuminated keep reflected in the moat carried a scene reminiscent of the Imperial Palace at night. Runners passed by in numbers, and with convenience stores and restrooms nearby, the area seemed built for it. Living close by, a nightly run past the castle would likely become routine.

A sizable Don Quijote near the business hotels adds a quiet convenience of its own.
Overall Impression
A tourist face built around a national treasure castle, and a suburban face supporting daily life. Anytime Fitness Matsumoto Tsukama holds both quietly at once.
The equipment is more than sufficient, and the floor carries a real sense of space. The distance from the station is a drawback, but for anyone arriving by car, the location works well. The quality of the surrounding neighborhood seems to carry directly into the comfort of the gym itself.
