Anytime Fitness Asagaya-kita Review ― When the Chuo Line Expectation Misses

Sunday, late morning. 3 minutes north of Asagaya Station.

Gyms along the Chuo Line come with a reputation. Cramped. Crowded. Free weight areas with nowhere to even stand and wait a turn. Ogikubo was like that. So was Nishi-Ogikubo.

The door opened on that expectation.

It missed.

The square floor is wide. Cardio along the windows, training floor and stretch space through the middle, free weights at the back. All of it on one level, and still there is room to spare.

At the front desk, a foreign visitor was signing up for a membership. A scene that turns up now and then on this pilgrimage.

Access

A 3-minute walk from the station, exactly as the official listing says. Walking it, the distance feels shorter than that.

Ground floor of a building facing a main road. The sign is large enough that nobody gets lost.

The bicycle parking beside the entrance is packed. There is no car parking, but in a location like this it hardly matters. This is a gym people ride to. https://www.google.com/maps/embed?pb=!1m18!1m12!1m3!1d3239.7465977695515!2d139.63324787623216!3d35.70785292851022!2m3!1f0!2f0!3f0!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!3m3!1m2!1s0x6018ed000e3058e1%3A0xb3cb3b4602bad4c7!2z44Ko44OL44K_44Kk44Og44OV44Kj44OD44OI44ON44K56Zi_5L2Q6LC35YyX5bqX!5e0!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1785660764084!5m2!1sen!2sus

Inside the Gym

One floor, square in shape. Everything is visible from anywhere in the room.

A free water dispenser sits just inside the door. The overall feel is close to Saginomiya or Shakujii-koen. Nothing flashy. Simply in order.

Cardio machines line the windows. Inside them, the training floor and the stretch space. No mats are laid down, but the area itself is generous.

The free weight area occupies the back. Power racks and Smith machines, 5 in total, standing in a single row. The arrangement is satisfying to look at.

4 adjustable benches. 3 of them sit together, while the last one is tucked into a narrow gap. The dumbbell rack is close by, though the flow between them is a little tight. The compromise of a limited footprint shows here.

Machines come from Life Fitness and Hammer Strength, with several plate-loaded units concentrated around chest work. The cable machine has an unusual shape that lets multiple people work different movements at the same time.

The assumption that a Chuo Line gym must be tiny does not hold here. A full-body session fits without compromise.

Crowding

Sunday, late morning, and it was busy.

Open space runs short. The free weight area in particular tightens once people fill it. With 5 racks and 4 benches in this footprint, that is the trade.

Still, the range of machines means a wait rarely stops anything. Crowding does not turn into standing around.

It comes down to timing. Weekday afternoons, or late at night, are when the space earns its keep.

The Neighborhood

Asagaya resembles Koenji.

Shopping streets, and no shortage of places to eat. A short turn off the station leads into narrow alleys hung with red lanterns and hand-painted signs. Passing through in daylight, the whole strip looks quiet, slightly off duty.

Partway along one of those alleys, a guesthouse sign appeared. A wooden board, the name brushed in ink.

A guesthouse sign found along the way.

It brought the person at the front desk back to mind. People stay in this neighborhood, and train at this neighborhood’s gym. That is what Asagaya has become.

Small apartments built for people living alone fill the surrounding blocks. An easy place to live.

Overall Impressions

The Chuo Line assumption gets overturned here, in the right direction.

Space, 5 racks in a row, machines that cover the ground. 3 minutes from the station, bicycle parking included. As an everyday gym, almost nothing is missing.

The weaknesses are the crowding and the thin margins in the free weight area. That one bench pushed into a corner shows how carefully the floor had to be divided. Which is another way of saying how much was fit into this location.

For anyone living in Asagaya, this is the answer. 8 points.
