This review covers Anytime Fitness Hachioji Motoyokoyamacho, a gym on the eastern side of Hachioji in western Tokyo.
It also marks a milestone: the 100th Anytime Fitness location on this pilgrimage, reached one store at a time over more than 2 years.
Nothing about the day was different from the 99 before it. The route began, as always, on foot from the nearest station.

Access
The gym is a 12-minute walk from the North Exit of JR Hachioji Station. It is not a station-front location, but the distance is comfortable on foot.
The colorful signboards around the station gradually fall behind. After crossing the main intersection, the route follows a wide road, where the buildings grow lower and the sky opens up.
The gym occupies the 2nd floor of a 2-story building, with a 16-car parking lot on the ground level. The layout welcomes both those who walk in and those who drive.
The familiar purple running-man logo appears on the white exterior wall and again on a large sign at street level, making the gym easy to spot from a distance.
An outdoor staircase leads up to the entrance. The glass facade is framed in purple, and the lights of the gym floor are faintly visible from outside.
At the top of the stairs is a small arched canopy over the door. Stickers for the AED, security service and free Wi-Fi are displayed at the entrance, and staff hours are 11:00 to 20:00.
Atmosphere and Facilities
The first impression on entering is space. The floor is square in shape, and the machines are arranged with generous gaps between them rather than packed together. The open area in the center of the room is especially large.
Track lights run along the ceiling, and a row of high, horizontal windows lets soft daylight fall across the light-colored floor.
Toilets, showers and lockers are located at the back. These areas are also roomy, with fully separated sections for men and women, and both the showers and changing rooms are private.
The stretching area sits on a slightly raised purple floor. 3 mats are laid out from the start, yet there is still ample space around them, a rare quality in a stretching zone.
A full-wall mirror, a cable machine, a balance ball and step platforms complete the area, with a TV mounted on the wall. The space works not only for stretching but also for bodyweight and core training.
This is where the store’s sense of open space is most evident.
The free weight section has 2 adjustable benches and a combined total of 3 Smith machines and power racks. The path between the benches and the dumbbells is reasonably spacious, though the number of stations is modest for a gym of this size.
The machines are mainly PRECOR weight-stack units, lined up in neat rows of silver frames. The selection is not especially wide, but it covers the full body. Those looking to train with high intensity will want to combine the machines with free weights.
The cardio section, by contrast, is well stocked. Treadmills line the windows, joined by upright bikes and cross trainers. The length of this row may be the most memorable feature of the floor, making the gym a good fit for members who focus on walking or cardio.
In one corner stands a small round table with a black bench and a rack holding several issues of Tarzan, a Japanese fitness magazine. A sign on the table outlines the house rules, including a guideline to rotate equipment after about 20 minutes when others are waiting.
A hydrogen water server and a supplement server are also available. The overall pace feels unhurried, closer to a suburban gym than a central Tokyo one.
Crowd Levels
The visit took place on a Saturday morning. Several members were training, but there was no waiting for equipment, and the free weight stations were available despite their limited number.
Conditions will vary by time of day. Given the small number of benches and racks, some waiting may occur at peak hours.
Surroundings
The North Exit of Hachioji Station is a busy commercial area, with buildings standing shoulder to shoulder around the bus rotary. Signs for restaurants, a bookstore and drugstores crowd the view.
The gym sits a short distance from this bustle, in a quieter area. It is easy to combine a workout with a meal or some shopping near the station.
With parking directly below the gym and bicycle parking also available, the location suits members arriving by car or bicycle as well as on foot.
Overall Impression
The walk from the station is a little long, and the number of free weight stations feels limited for a gym of this size.
Even so, the open center of the floor and the spacious stretching area leave a lasting impression, and the cardio lineup is extensive. This is a gym that chooses room to breathe over packing in equipment.
With this visit, the pilgrimage reached 100 stores. Looking back, the memories are not only of gym floors but also of the walks from each station and the streets of each town along the way.
Nothing special marked the 100th visit: the same walk, the same workout, the same photographs. That steady repetition is what turned into a milestone.
The day continued in Tachikawa, with a reunion among high school classmates for the first time in 3 years. A new gym and familiar faces, all on the same day.
The evening ended with a session at Dr.stretch in Tachikawa. A long pilgrimage depends on looking after the body, and regular visits are likely to continue until the shoulder recovers.
On to the next store, at an unhurried pace.
The pilgrimage continues.
